TAUNTON School is “very successful” in preparing its pupils to shape the world in the 21st century, a top-level inspection has found.

The school, which has just announced a £2.3-million expansion, was visited before Christmas by a nine-strong team from the Government-backed Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

They spent four days in the senior and international schools and their findings, issued this week, gave both establishments a glowing report. “Throughout the school, pupils display good and frequently excellent levels of understanding, knowledge and skills across their subjects and activities"

“Overall, results in public examinations are good in relation to pupils’ abilities, indicating that their progress across the school is above the average for pupils of similar ability, and frequently rapid.”

It added:“Teachers have excellent subject knowledge and much teaching demonstrates great skill and enthusiasm to inspire pupils’ love of learning.”

The inspectors said pupils’ benefited from the excellent quality of the pastoral care.

“Their welfare and educational development are strongly supported by the excellent arrangements for welfare, health and safety – the quality of boarding is excellent.”

They also spoke of the “excellent” extra-curricular programme on offer to students.

Taunton School’s Headmaster, Dr John Newton, said: "This is a very strong report which rightly extols the quality of our educational provision.

"We have some small areas to improve, but we have already addressed one of those and two will be resolved in the next three months.

"In all, the strengths of the school come through loud and clear and I am delighted.’

Caroline Nixon, Principal of Taunton School International, added: “It is a mark of our success that we have now been accredited separately and in such glowing terms by ISI.”
